Engagement
While it’s great to see employee experience is important to most (82%) senior leadership teams, 18% of businesses feel it’s completely disregarded. This is what we found from our recent HR trends survey. Moreover, engaged employees are 21% more productive than their disengaged counterparts.
When it comes to monitoring the engagement of your employees, the following areas can be explored:
Employee turnover
Job satisfaction
Employee productivity
Absenteeism
eNPS
This could be something your business has a history of struggling with, or you could be going through a bad spell, either way there are things you can do to action this data. Employee turnover can be costly and affect the profitability of a business. For churn rates to improve, you need to hire the right people and retain that talent. But how can you do that?
First up, review your onboarding process. Getting the onboarding experience right for new employees is essential; it has an incredible impact on the first few months of employment. This includes familiarising new hires with policies and procedures, getting them prepared for their role, and ultimately instilling confidence by extending a warm welcome and support network. Integrating an employee into the company culture can be a make-or-break situation, as 69% of employees are more likely to stay with a company for three years if they experience great onboarding.

Looking at job satisfaction is another good place to start. How satisfied are your employees? From celebrating success with reward and recognition, offering flexibility and prioritising work-life balance, to encouraging growth through development and continuing education, focusing on the wellbeing of your team can go a long way. Research by Deloitte found that 77% of workers have experienced burnout at their current job, and the top driver of burnout is a lack of support and recognition from leadership. HR should be working with line managers to foster innovation and relaying company values, enhancing every role within the business.
Another area closely linked to engagement is employee productivity. Engaged employees are 2.5 times more likely to exceed performance expectations which shows the importance of focusing on the engagement of your people.
31% of businesses don’t link performance to pay
There are many ways businesses can improve employee engagement to boost productivity. Starting with pay, reward, and recognition – do you link pay to performance? Findings from our recent HR survey showed that 31% of businesses don’t link performance to pay. If your organisation is in that percentage, you could look at introducing performance-related incentives to pay structures and bonuses.
Simply recognising your employees for their hard work can make a great deal of difference too, so in addition to verbally thanking your team, you could launch a reward and recognition platform for peers to acknowledge each other’s hard work.
In addition to these suggestions, it’s also important to ensure your employees are equipped to not only carry out their job, but to do it well. Sometimes basic needs can be disregarded or lost in the hustle and bustle of business, such as headcount, tools, and technology. Then you can also explore the possibility of hybrid/remote working for employees to help them manage their work-life balance, which is another way to boost productivity, and ultimately engagement.
Companies with highly engaged employees experience a 41% reduction in absenteeism. This shows that getting engagement wrong can be costly to your business but getting it right can encourage more enthusiasm, whether it’s to receive positive feedback or hit bonuses. We will touch more on absenteeism in the next section.
Do you ask for and recognise employee feedback? This is crucial to successfully engage your employees and although it’s not always physically possible to give people everything they want, it’s important to recognise employees’ needs to keep them engaged. eNPS surveys are a beneficial tool that provide businesses with insights into the needs, wants and concerns of their employees. People are the backbone of every business, so it’s important to use data to make informed decisions and implement strategies to boost engagement. Businesses can then reap the benefits of a happier, more productive workforce, and ultimately a more successful business.

Managing engagement manually can be fine for small businesses with low head count and churn. But businesses with higher headcounts and KPIs linked to engagement quickly come unstuck without proper reporting and process automation.
